The return of Vladimir Putin to the Presidency of the Russian Federation in 2012 saw unprecedented levels of domestic protest, yet the former FSB strongman still remains widely popular in Russia. However, the tough sentences handed down in the recent trial of the feminist punk band 'Pussy Riot' have served to re-awaken Western observers to the long tradition of political dissent in Russia.

Oliver Bullough
Oliver Bullough is an independent journalist and author of the award-winning Let our Fame be Great: Journeys Among The Defiant People of the Caucasus (Penguin, 2010). A former Security Correspondent for Reuters Moscow, he is also Caucasus Editor for the Institute of War and Peace Reporting.

Oliver's next book is entitled The Last Man in Russia (Penguin, 2013) and explains how the mass trauma inflicted on Russia by Stalin has resonated down through the generations, causing an epidemic of depression and binge drinking. Focussing on a rebel priest who tried to break the cycle of misery he saw in his parishioners, Bullough tells the story of one man who resisted the machine of the state.

Oliver will be visiting Dublin on Wednesday November 7th 2012 to speak at the launch of 'Democracy Now Part II'.

Naphta
15 years after he started DJing and promoting drum'n'bass music in his home town, Dublin-based artist Naphta released the 'Democracy Now' LP on D1 Recordings. Composed of audio 'samples' from films, documentaries and internet uploads, the album constituted Naphta's personal response to the post 9-11 'War on Terror'. Now, after three years of research and writing, Naphta is unveiling the follow-up. 'Democracy Now Part II' is a blistering critique of the war waged against the Chechen people by Russia since 1994.

Much of Russia's present condition - including the ascent of the previously unknown Vladimir Putin - can be traced to the recent Chechen Wars. Indeed, the murdered investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya had argued that Russia's brutal crushing of the Chechen's bid for independence was doing untold damage, not just to the Chechens, but to Russian society as well. What had become permissible in Chechnya - arbitrary arrest and detention, torture, unlawful killings - was spreading, virus-like, to the rest of the Russian Federation.

Meanwhile in the Caucasus, Russia's claim to be battling the frontline of miltant Islam was becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy. Ignored by the West and starved of outside support, Chechen rebels have increasingly turned to militant Islam, which is very much at odds with their own religious traditions.

Moodyman & Eamonn Doyle [Disco Edits Set]

An outspoken voice in the normally non-confrontational world of electronic dance music, Moodymann [Kenny Dixon Jr.] is committed to keeping a distinctly black imprint on techno and house.

Moodymann sound is a hybrid form of techno/house dance music arrived at via innovative use of reworked riffs, samples and grooves. While he may frustrate people with his refusal to be interviewed and insistence on reminding people of the genre's origins, the soulfulness of his output is unquestioned.

Utilizing classic soul and jazz samples, low-slung bass lines and an approach to drum programming that is diametrically opposed to the tendency to push the tempo faster and faster, he has achieved classic status thanks to gems like "Sunday Morning", "Shades of Jae", and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra's "People Make the World Go Round". Following years of 12" only releases, he compiled his best work on "Silentintroduction", one of the most celebrated albums of the late 90s.

Mark Broom - Deal Or No Deal EP

One of techno’s most diverse and prolific producers ‘Mark Broom’ is back again to demonstrate the definition of dub techno. This is a purist record through and through that unashamedly harks back to the classic Chain Reaction and Basic Channel sound, something that the world and its DJ’s crave endlessly, and rightly so. All four cuts sail forth in calm warmth and steady bass, massive reverbs and echo are worked intermittently lifting everything upwards like a strong cosy breeze. The listener is forcibly bounced up and down in a gentle fashion, (we would expect nothing less than gentlemanly behaviour from Broomer) and through proper application of decibels a full cellular body massage can result. This is essential dub for the techno journeyman out there. Not only great to listen to, but also a helping hand with your exfoliation routine.
